Did the ancients wonder
As I do today
that, after the sun was blotted out
and silvery shadow took its place,
It returned to make a day
Shining just as brightly
As if no darkness had ever
Passed a hand across its face?
The sun, the moon the earth
exchange shadows
as they whirl through space
And shadows travel
even as a river flows.
Where there was darkness
In some insubstantial moment
of a now
there is light
That grows along the edges
of our sight .
We are all so very sure
the night will come
yet until the earth stops its
dance around the sun
or the sun explodes
and shifts the universe again
day will follow
even though the time of
sleep and darkness seems,
In all our suffering,
Unending and without reprieve
The light comes slowly
back
To shift what we perceive.
